Put it on a live site

Where your license key goes, how the editor counts your domains, and what happens when a subscription ends.

The editor is free while you build. Once it's on a live site, it needs a license key from one of the plans. Without one it still opens and edits, with a thin "Unlicensed Mastershot editor" line above it, but every photo and video it saves has "Unlicensed Mastershot editor" written across the middle.

Where your key comes from

After you buy a plan, Polar shows your key and emails it to you. It starts with MSE-. You can find it again any time in Polar's customer portal by signing in with the email you bought with.

Where the key goes

Pass it as licenseKey when you make the editor:

js
appendDefaultEditor("#editor", {
  licenseKey: "MSE-XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX",
})

Or as the element's attribute:

html
<mastershot-editor
  license-key="MSE-XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX"
></mastershot-editor>

The same works with openDefaultEditor, appendDefaultEditors and processImage. The key sits in your page's code where anyone can read it, and that's fine: it only works on the domains you add to it.

Paste your key on the start page to check it and get this code with your key already in it.

Add your domains

Your key works only on the domains you add to it, so a key copied from your page does nothing on anyone else's site.

  1. Open the start page and check your key.
  2. Sign in with a Mastershot account that uses the email you bought with. If you don't have one, make one with that email.
  3. Add each domain the editor goes on. Indie covers 2, Business 5, and Enterprise any number.
  • A domain covers its subdomains too: example.com covers www.example.com, shop.example.com and staging.example.com.
  • Localhost, private network addresses, and names ending in .test, .local, .localhost, .example, .invalid and .internal never need a key, so you don't add them.
  • You can take a domain off and add another at any time. The change reaches the editor within an hour.

The start page also lists every domain the editor has loaded on with your key, so you can see if your key turns up somewhere you didn't put it. Those sites are unlicensed: they show the line, and what they save is marked.

When a subscription ends

Every version released while your subscription was active keeps working on your domains, with no line and no mark, for as long as you use it. Versions released after it ended are unlicensed until you subscribe again.

If the line shows up

Open your browser's console on the page. The editor says why there:

  • "needs a license key": the page didn't pass licenseKey, or passed an empty one.
  • "the license key isn't valid, or its subscription has ended": check the key on the start page. It says whether Polar knows it, and whether it has ended.
  • "isn't one of this license key's domains": add the domain on the start page.

The editor checks the key with mastershot.app once an hour at most. If that check can't be made for any reason, the editor counts as licensed.

Stuck, or something isn't working? Email [email protected] with what you tried. If a photo or video won't open, send it if you can, and we'll make it work.
